The Time for Fall Vehicle Maintenance Is Now

Our winters can get pretty cold here in Canton, MI, but you can stay safe on the icy roads if you maintain your automobile. Fall is the perfect time for a vehicle inspection, and Mechanic One Auto Repair & European Auto Repair would be happy to give your car, crossover, SUV, or truck the once-over and prepare it for winter. Here are some fall auto services you should consider before the weather gets too cold.

Battery Inspection

Your vehicle’s battery struggles to produce power in the winter because cold weather slows down the internal chemical reaction. The older your battery is the more it will struggle when the mercury drops. Have your battery inspected and consider replacing it now if it’s older than three or four years old, the average lifespan of a car battery.

Fluid Flushes and Fills

If you haven’t done so in a while, now is the time to flush and replace the antifreeze and change the oil. Your engine relies on antifreeze and motor oil in the winter to help prevent icing and engine wear. Winter is also a good time to replace conventional motor oil with synthetic for better protection if you drive a high-performance or older vehicle.

Heater Core Test

Your heater core is what keeps the interior of your automobile warm when you turn up the thermostat. The core uses the heat from the radiator fluid to do so. Few things are worse than turning on your vehicle’s heater only to find it isn’t working. Have the heater core tested now to avoid this problem before the weather gets really cold.

Tire Balance/Replacement

Your tires must be in good shape in order to grip the wet and icy winter roads. If you are driving on bald and/or unbalanced tires, you are putting yourself and others at risk. Fall is the perfect time to have your tires inspected and replaced if they need it or rotated and balanced if they don’t. You might also consider a wheel alignment if necessary.

Windshield Wipers

Finally, check your windshield wiper blades to make sure they have plenty of rubber on them. If they don’t, replace them now before the winter storms come in. It’s also a good idea to replace your windshield washer fluid with a formula that will de-ice the windshield when you need it to. Buy a good scraper, too, if you don’t have one.
